Technological advances and modern-day living have triggered lifestyles to become sedentary and decreased involvement of play in the natural world. Due to this, children are missing out on important aspects of development by missing the opportunities to play and focusing more on academic activities and screen-based sedentary games (Liyana & Abu Bakar, 2019, p. 2645).

Unstructured and outdoor play that is freely initiated by the child positively influences many aspects of a child’s development and should be included as an integral part of the educational system to positively benefit the child’s development. This essay discusses the influence play has on a child’s physical, cognitive and social development.
